Kindergartener refuses to color Jayhawk picture for class

February 16, 2012|By Eyewitness News

(OLATHE, Kan.) — An Olathe kindergartner protests a coloring assignment. Her teacher gave her a picture of a Jayhawk for Kansas day.

There's only one problem. Emma Burton's mom and dad went to K-State. She told her teacher she wanted to color a Powercat instead.

When her teacher said there weren't any Ppowercats to color, Emma threw the Jayhawk in the trash.

The teacher told the girl's mom about what happened.  Emma's mom made a bargain with her daughter. She would color the Jayhawk she threw in the trash, but she could also color a Powercat that her mother printed - but only if she wrote an apology letter with it.

She agreed, but announced the next day she would go to school wearing a K-State shirt.

Emma returned to school the next day with her colorerd Jayhawk and the Powercat apology letter. Later that day, she threw her Jayhawk coloring sheet away at home.

Emma's mom Julie blogged about what happened (click here to read). Afterwards, K-State's president sent her a letter and jokingly offered Emma a scholarship in 2025. She was also invited and honored at this week's Sunflower Showdown against KU.
