K-96 cable barrier additions to be looked at this year

February 21, 2012|By Megan Strader | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — They're hard to miss - cable barriers separating the east and westbound lanes on a portion of K-96. The barriers were installed late last summer as one of the first projects of its kind in Kansas.

"Somehow you have to pick a starting and a stopping point and it was very logical along K-96 to start a I-135 and go out to Rock Road because the traffic numbers are so much higher in that area and drop off past Rock Road," explains Tom Hein, Spokesman for KDOT.

But following an accident, east of Rock Road Tuesday morning, Eyewitness News wanted to know if there are any plans to extend the cable barriers.

"We look at these highways and evaluate them on three basic factors - median width, traffic numbers and the accident history."

Hein says Kansas Highways will be evaluated this year. So, depending on how K-96 stacks up against other roads, the barriers could be extended.

Hein says the four mile stretch has been successful. He says there have been nine strikes and no cars were able to cross the median in any of those accidents.
