(MEDICINE LODGE, Kan.) — A Medicine Lodge man received critical burns from an apartment fire overnight.  The fire started around 2:30 Thursday morning in the 600 block of east Curry Lane.

A man in one of the apartments was unable to get out quickly and received significant burns.  An ambulance drove him to a Wichita hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities helped rescue other residents. Medicine Lodge police officer Ryan McNeil says he and a firefighter arrived at the burning apartment and saw a man on the second floor trying to get out.  He says they yelled for the man to kick out the window.  The firefighter and officer found a ladder and helped rescue the man along with other residents in the apartment complex.

The Kansas Fire Marshal is now investigating how this fire started.
