A furious rally in the final minutes was not enough for the Wichita State women's basketball team in the semifinal round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday. The No. 3 Shockers fell, 56-52, to No. 7 Drake.
Wichita State never led and trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half before blowing through an 11-0 run in the final four minutes. A Jessica Diamond three-point basket capped the run and pulled WSU within 53-52 with 1:10 remaining. Haleigh Lankster spurred the run with six-straight points en route to a team-high 15. Lankster also tallied seven steals, tying the WSU record in the MVC Tournament.
Drake, which previously defeated No. 10 Evansville and No. 2 Illinois State, advanced to the title game against No. 4 Creighton.
MVC Player-of-the-Year Rachael Hackbarth tallied her NCAA-leading 24th double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Freshmen Carly Grenfell (11) and Kyndal Clark (14) also netted double digits.
