Police ID man killed by officers in Old Town

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police have identified a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed by officers in Old Town early Saturday morning. Police say Marquez Smart died after they witnessed him open fire into a large crowd of people.

Police witnessed Marquez fire two shots into the crowd in front of a public parking garage near 2nd and Mosley. Officer's responded by shooting back.

"He did not drop the weapon," said Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams. "The officers felt he was a continued threat to the general area, that forced them to stop the threat."

For the first time since the shooting, Williams released details of what happened.

The shooting also injured a 29-year-old man with an injury to his right calf and three women- A 17-year-old who was injured in her left calf, an 18-year-old who was injured in her lower right side and a 19-year-old who suffered an injury to her right shoulder. All four are expected to recover from their injuries.

Williams say some of the victims may have been hit by gunshots fired by police.

"At this time we don't know if the wounds are the result of our officers firing their weapons," Williams said. "We have not gotten back the forensics as of yet."

The shooting is under investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. They say Smart did not fire back at police, which had previously been reported.

The two officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave. One officer has been with the department for seven years, the other officer had one year of experience.
