(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police have identified a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed by officers in Old Town early Saturday morning. Police say Marquez Smart died after they witnessed him open fire into a large crowd of people.
Police witnessed Marquez fire two shots into the crowd in front of a public parking garage near 2nd and Mosley. Officer's responded by shooting back.
"He did not drop the weapon," said Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams. "The officers felt he was a continued threat to the general area, that forced them to stop the threat."
For the first time since the shooting, Williams released details of what happened.
The shooting also injured a 29-year-old man with an injury to his right calf and three women- A 17-year-old who was injured in her left calf, an 18-year-old who was injured in her lower right side and a 19-year-old who suffered an injury to her right shoulder. All four are expected to recover from their injuries.
