(RENO COUNTY, Kan.) — It looks dangerous, but it usually causes no harm. A cold air funnel formed over Cheney Lake Thursday evening.

It caught a lot of people off guard and caused Eyewitness News viewers to call our newsroom wondering what's going on. Several other cold air funnels were reported west of Wichita as well.
Storm Team 12 Chief Meteorologist Merril Teller says cold air aloft with a low pressure area right overhead create the spin. "They're usually not dangerous," says Teller. "They very rarely make it to the ground and even if they do they're very weak."
