(LAWRENCE, Kan.) — Kansas assistant coach Danny Manning has reached an agreement in principle to become the next head coach at Tulsa.

"I'm excited and looking forward to being the head basketball coach at The University of Tulsa. I want to thank President Upham, Ross (Parmley) and the search committee for allowing me this tremendous opportunity to coach at a University with a fine basketball tradition," said Manning. "I'd also like to thank Coach (Bill) Self for giving me the chance to be a part of his staff for the past nine years. I have learned a tremendous amount about the game and the profession from him and all of the members of his staff.

Manning led the Jayhawks to the 1988 national championship before becoming the top pick of the 1988 NBA Draft. He spent 15 seasons in the league before returning to Lawrence in 2003 as Director of Student-Athlete Development and Team Manager. He joined Bill Self's coaching staff in 2007.

Manning replaces Doug Wojcik who was fired earlier this month after seven season with the Golden Hurricane.

Manning will remain with KU through the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas is also losing Barry Hinson to Southern Illinois. The former Missouri State coach is returning to the sideline after several years as KU's Director of Men's Basketball Operations.

“We are all so happy for Barry. The last four years we’ve had a guy that has been a huge asset to our program. Everyone within the university and department has enjoyed him being here so much but his goal was always to get back on the sidelines as a head coach," said Bill Self. "What a great opportunity that Southern Illinois has presented to him. I know there is not one guy in America that is more proud or will work harder representing Southern Illinois University the way Barry Hinson will."

At a news conference on Wednesday, Hinson says he'll remain at KU through Monday's national championship game, should KU win on Saturday against Ohio State in the Final Four.
