(EL DORADO, Kan.) — An 18 month old baby dies in the hospital from injuries. El Dorado police now have changed the nature of their investigation from child abuse to homicide. Parents said baby Jayla had an accident at home. Doctors say the injuries baby Jayla sustained were inconsistent with the their story. Police arrested the baby's 23 year old mother on Monday.

“I'm angry at myself that I was friends with this person when she had Jayla and I didn't realize that anything wasn't going on.  Why could I not see that?” asked former friend Emily Winegarner.

Friends, family, and the community are grieving the loss of 18 month old baby Jayla, She died Friday after she succumbed to severe injuries. Police arrested the baby's mother Monday for homicide and child abuse. While there are plenty of unanswered questions, those who once knew them discuss memories.

“A lot of hurt. A lot of sadness.  You meet her one time and you fall in love with her.  She's a very sweet little girl.  She's one that even when she's sick, she's happy and quiet.  She was very easy to take care of,” said former friend Kristen Greene.

Greene says she now wishes she would have pushed harder when she says Jayla's mother made a call for help months before.

“She had called me to ask me if I would take legal guardianship of Jayla.  I told her I would, but I needed to talk to my husband first. I asked her why. She said people were calling the S-R-S saying she was abused,” said Greene.

While baby Jayla doesn't have a second chance, Greene has a new outlook.

“Our goal is to not ever let Jayla's name or memory die.  It's going to live on forever,” said Greene.

She wants justice for Jayla. She and Winegarner started up a Facebook page to offer community and family support. Now there are 4,000 people following their posts.

“We want to fix parks in Jayla's memory. We want to donate to child abuse associations in Jayla's memory, and we'd love to see a shelter in this area for abused children,” said Greene.

Their hope is to raise child abuse awareness and raise money to help pay for the family’s funeral.

The county attorney says formal charges could be filed as soon as Wednesday afternoon.
