{LAWRENCE, Ks.} — Thomas Robinson will leave KU for the NBA draft.  Robinson held a press conference Monday morning with Coach Bill Self and his little sister Jayla.

Robinson says he plans to enter the 2012 NBA draft.  He says it was a tough decision but it puts him in a position to take care of his little sister.  His decision came on her birthday, one he says she'll never forget.

He says he was up all night trying to think of a way to show his appreciation to his teammates, coach and fans.  He says words can not describe how much everyone has meant to him.  He says he's going to miss everyone, including the town of Lawrence.

Coach Self says if Robinson didn't make the decision to leave, he would have pushed it.  Self says his goal was to put Robinson in a position to play in the NBA.  Self says the draft is the best thing for Robinson at this moment.  He says  Robinson has done more than anyone could have ever expected for KU basketball.  He grew up in front of the fans and everyone loves him and is proud of him.

Robinson has been stellar for the Jayhawks this season recording 27 double-doubles with his final double-double coming in the NCAA championship game against Kentucky (18 points, 17 rebounds).

Robinson says he plans to eventually finish his degree.  He says he's not that many hours away from graduating so he's talking with academic advisers about how to proceed.  He says getting a diploma is something his mother would have wanted.  His mom died unexpectedly in 2011, leaving he and his little sister behind.
