(WICHITA, Kan.) — KWCH 12 Eyewitness News has been awarded a 2012 regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best newscast.  Winners were announced Thursday by the Radio Television Digital News Association, or RTDNA.  Named after an esteemed pioneer of television news broadcasting, the Edward R. Murrow award recognizes the pursuit of excellence in journalism.

The winning newscast entry by KWCH 12 was “Eyewitness News at 5:00” from March 31, 2011.  The show, produced by Jennifer Searle and directed by Michael Wollscheidt, included special coverage of the Wichita State men’s basketball team playing in the NIT championship game in New York City.  The newscast, anchored by Cindy Klose, Michael Schwanke and Ross Janssen, included reports by Sports Director Bruce Haertl and reporters Jenn Bates, Dave Roberts and Rebecca Gannon.

“It takes a team effort to produce this kind of newscast, including a lot of people you don’t see on TV, like photographers, producers and news managers,” said KWCH News Director Chad Cross.  “Our newsroom is also supported by top-notch production, engineering, marketing and sales staffs.  This award represents a TV station that strives daily to produce quality, responsible journalism, and goes above and beyond to serve Kansas viewers.”

KWCH has previously received four regional and two national Murrow awards.  This is the station’s first award for best newscast.

Regional winners will be judged for the national Edward R. Murrow Awards.  National winners will be announced in June.  According to RTDNA, it received more than 3,500 entries this year, setting an all-time record for entries and making it one of the most competitive contests in RTDNA history.  “The quality of this year’s record number of entries was outstanding.  Our regional winners had tough competition from their peers and deserve to be very proud of their accomplishments,” said Mike Cavender, RTDNA Executive Director.

RTDNA is the world’s largest professional organization of electronic news professionals, dedicated to setting standards for newsgathering and reporting.
