The Backstretch Blog: Texas Stampede

April 13, 2012|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

After a week off, it's time to round 'em up and head to the Texas Motor Speedway. All the manufactures have enjoyed some success at Texas, but this is a really good track for Roush Fenway Fords. Matt Kenseth won the spring race one year ago. In all Roush has eight times in Texas.

“I love racing at Texas and it’s been one of our best race tracks. I’ve got some great memories from that place and it’s a fun place to win a race," said Carl Edwards who has three of those wins, including a sweep in 2008. "Those mile-and-a-half tracks have been great for us from day one.”

In recent history, Texas was the place where Tony Stewart got one of his five wins enroute to a cup championship and in 2010, Denny Hamlin swept in Texas on the way to a second place finish.

"We’re not to our 2010 form as far as the speed of our cars and things like that," said Hamlin.  "We’re getting there, though.  Every week our stuff is getting better and better.  I think that we are timing this year pretty well right now.  I think that we’re going to start to run well here in these next couple months."

And could this be the place where Dale Earnhardt, Junior ends his long winless streak. He took a trip to victory lane way back in 2000. Other past winners in the field include; Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson.

"That just shows you how hard the sport is< " said Burton. "Texas Motor Speedway is different anytime we run there. That is why we have seen so many different winners. That track doesn't have a personality. Every time you go there, it is something different. I think that is why you see so many drivers run well there one race and then terrible the next. I don't know why, but it is different every time we go there."
