(WICHITA, Kan.) — Friday was the third officer involved shooting in Wichita in the past five weeks. Factfinder 12 takes a look at the other shootings.
On March 9th, police say a man started shooting into a crowd of people in Old Town. A security camera shows people running for safety. Wichita Police shot and killed the gunman, 23-year-old Marquez Smart. Three other people who were not involved in the shooting were shot too. Police say some of them may have been hit by the officer's bullets. The two officer's involved were put on administrative leave, but are now back on duty.
Then on March 31st, police received a report of shots fired on South Charles Avenue. Officers found the suspected car about two miles away near 35th and South Everett. The four suspects inside ditched the vehicle and started running. An officer chased one of them behind some houses. A confrontation led to the officer firing several shots, killing the suspect. The officer was put on administrative leave but is now back at work.
