Update: Road closures in Sedgwick County

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Update from Sedgwick County: 

Road Closures

     - Pawnee, between Woodlawn and Webb
     - Part of Harry & Webb
     - Rock Road, between Harry & Pawnee

Road Openings:
     - Southbound 47th St. S. & K-15

  • Oaklawn -
    • Citizens are reminded to continue to avoid the areas of 39th St. South to 63rd St. South and Hydraulic to K-15.  
    • Residents of Oaklawn need to show I.D. to return to their homes.
    • Pinaire Mobile Home Park residents are not being allowed to return to their residence as emergency crews are still assessing damage to the area.  This area has sustained significant damage.  
    • Salvation Army canteens are located in the 47th St. & Clifton area to assist residents with food and water.  
    • The Derby Recreation Center sheltered 29 individuals overnight with the majority being bused back to their residence in Oaklawn this morning.  
  • Cherry Creek (Pawnee and Rock Rd.) –
    • Long Term Acute Care Center (8080 E. Pawnee) has sustained damage and has no power.  Approximately 18 patients are being transported as cautionary measure to area hospitals.  
    • Citizens are reminded to continue to avoid the Rock Road and Pawnee St. areas.
  • Southeast Wichita
    • Rock Road to Webb Rd and Pawnee to Harry St. are areas that citizens are being asked to avoid due to significant tree and power line damages.  


It is imperative that anyone wishing to assist not go directly to any damaged areas as emergency crews are working to access the areas.  Anyone wishing to assist residents and communities affected by last evening’s tornados should contact United Way’s 211 call center.

Sedgwick County Chairman Tim Norton has declared a State of Disaster.  This declaration will initiate the Emergency Operations Plan and notify State of Kansas officials that additional support and assistance may be needed.

Preliminary damage estimates could be as high as $283 million.

Roads are so bad in parts of the county at the emergency accident reporting plan has been put into effect.  EARP means that if you have an accident, no one was injured and no alcohol was involved then exchange information and file a police report.

Here's a list of what the city and county are aware of right now.

.        The Governor has declared a State of Disaster Emergency.

·        Westar reported that 20,063 residents are without power.

·        Some Oaklawn residents are staying at the Derby Rec Center.

·        WPD has activated the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan.

·        USD 259 reported one building was damaged, a new roof at Colvin Elementary.

·        Area hospital officials reported a dozen patients.

·        The Kansas Aviation Museum had some damage including to the B47 display.

·        Unified Command centers were established at 55th and Clifton and Pawnee and Cherry Creek.

·        The American Red Cross has dispatched four disaster assessment teams.

·         Area Public Works officials were resetting traffic signals and cleaning up debris.

·        A roof was damaged at Hawker-Beechcraft and parts of it landed on Webb Road.

·         In the Oaklawn area, 100 trailers (in the Pinaire Mobile Home Park) were damaged, two homes were destroyed, several other homes were damaged, two residents were injured and transported and multiple residents were injured but not transported.

·        At nearby Spirit AeroSystems, most buildings were damaged; six were significantly damaged and four others had major damage. On-duty employees were accounted for by Spirit officials. Responders were managing hazardous material issues.

·        There is flash-flooding across Wichita and responders are asking residents to stay home and stay off streets.
