Some Kansas students get a day off because of unused snow days

April 25, 2012|By Rebecca White | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Some lucky students have one less day of school this year. Many school districts have not used their snow days and some school districts are giving teachers and students a day off.

This year the Winfield School District will let students out May 15, instead of May 16th. Assistant Superintendent Mark Littell says that Winfield builds snow days into the calendar and decided to let students out early. He says the district won’t see significant savings due to the change.

The Haysville school system is also letting students take advantage of this year’s mild winter. The school has canceled classes this Friday because of an unused snow day.

But other schools are keep students in class, even if there is an extra day.

Kids who attend Wichita, Andover and Hutchinson public schools should plan to hit the books for the full scheduled school year.

Dale Dennis, from the Kansas Department of Education, says the state requires schools to have at least 1116 hours of class each year or 186 six-hour days.

Dennis says if there are extra school days on the calendar because of unused snow days, the decision to keep or cancel classes is left up to each local school board.
