(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) — The Kansas City Chiefs have selected Dontari Poe as their first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Poe is a Defensive Tackle from Memphis. The Chiefs had the 11th overall pick in the first round.

The 346-pound Poe was a tour de force at the scouting combine, when he ran a 4.96-second 40, recorded a 29 1/2-inch vertical leap, and bench pressed 225 pounds 44 times.

General manager Scott Pioli has established a reputation for being risk-averse with his draft philosophy. But in choosing Poe, Pioli gambled on the raw athletic ability of a player who managed only 33 tackles, eight tackles for loss and one sack in Conference USA last season.

The Indianapolis Colts took Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in the draft. The selection was no surprise.

Last week, the team told Luck he was their choice over Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. Griffin was the No. 2 pick of the Washington Redskin.
