(SALINE COUNTY, Kan.) — One person is dead and two others are hurt after a crash near Solomon. It happened at a rest area on Interstate 70 around one o'clock Thursday afternoon.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says a semi-truck entering the rest area rear-ended a parked motor home. Troopers say the truck was traveling at highway speeds. There were two people asleep at the time in the RV.
Martin L. Bal, 67, was killed in the crash. His wife, Joan Bal, 72, was injured. She and the driver of the semi were taken to the Salina Regional Medial Center in critical condition. According to the KHP crash log, the Bals were traveling from Texas.
The force of the impact caused the motor home to catch fire. Eyewitnesses pulled the two people from the wreckage.
Because the semi was carrying hazardous materials, I-70 was closed for about 15 minutes. The rest area is closed while authorities wrapped up their investigation.
