KU Football excited for new start with Charlie Weis

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - — Kansas coach Charlie Weis is ready to get his new team on the field.

The Jayhawks play their annual spring game on Saturday, and there is plenty riding on the outcome. It's the first chance for high-profile transfers such as Dayne Crist to impress in a game environment, and the first opportunity for dozens of other guys to lay claim to a roster spot.

Weis is in his first season as the coach at Kansas. He was hired to resurrect a recently winning program that had fallen on hard times under Turner Gill, who was fired after a 2-10 season.

The spring game starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
