Wichita soldier dies in Afghanistan

(FT. RILEY, Kan.) — A Fort Riley Soldier has died in Afghanistan. Thirty-two year old Staff Sgt. Zachary Hargrove was pronounced dead at a medical facility at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, after being found unresponsive in his living quarters on May 3.

The cause of death is under investigation.

“Lt. Gov Jeff Colyer and I are deeply saddened to learn tonight about the death of Staff Sgt. Hargrove.  His bravery and the sacrifices he made for our state and nation will never be forgotten.  On behalf of a grateful state, Lt. Gov. Colyer and I offer our thoughts and prayers to his wife, family and friends for their tremendous loss,” Gov. Sam Brownback said in a statement.

On Hargrove's Facebook page, friends posted messages of support. One read, "I haven't seen you since high school, but when I got the news, the old days came right back." Another read, "I grew up with you down the street. We haven't talked in years but I have some really great memories with you and those I will keep forever. You're in my prayers."

Hargrove was a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 84th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion, 1st Infantry Division which is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hargrove was a Wichita native. He was assigned to Fort Riley in August 2008.
