Saying goodbye to Emerson Elementary School

May 06, 2012|By Melody Pettit | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — It was a day full of fond memories and sadness at Emerson Elementary school. Former and current students, teachers, and parents got to visit the school one last time before it closes for good.

It's a nearly 40-year old program but it was one of the schools USD 259 decided to close during recent re-     districting plans and budget cuts.

Those who are familiar with the program say it was more than just a school but a close knit family and say the school board made the wrong decision.

“We all wanted to keep it open, it's hard to see something that's working so well and helping so many students be left behind. It’s very disappointing,” said a former Emerson teacher.

A group of parents and teachers still meet to write letters and emails to state senators and school board officials. They know there's not much anyone can do now but still feel like their voices were not heard.

The four other schools shutting their doors are Bryant, Lincoln and Mueller.
