(WICHITA, Kan.) — An alert neighbor helped Wichita police catch two teenagers who burglarized a west side home Tuesday morning.

Investigators credited a 911 caller with keeping a close watch over her neighbor's home and providing a good description of the people who broke into the home in the 1400 block of N. Joann.

Officers went to the home and the 17 and 18 year-old burglars dashed off, WPD Lt. Doug Nolte said.  Both were arrested after a brief foot chase.

"She did a wonderful job," said neighbor Dorothy Wagner of the woman who reported the crime.

Wagner has lived in the neighborhood near 13th & West for 60 years.  She said it's nice to have neighbors who watch out for one another.

Police touted this case as an example of the effectiveness of neighborhood watch programs.

Burglaries have been on the rise this spring, according to WPD Lt. Barry Von Fange.  In April home break-ins were up 1.5%, compared to April 2011.  When non-residential burglaries are counted, the numbers are up nearly 12% for 2012, Von Fange said.
