GoG: Kooch wins and the Shockers head west

May 13, 2012|By GRANT MEECH | KWCH 12 Eyewitness Sports

WICHITA, Kan. — It's true - good guys do finish first. At least, in golf they did this week.

Matt Kuchar, the smiling assassin they call him, topped the field at TPC Sawgrass for the PLayers Championship at 13 under par.

It's his biggest win on the PGA Tour. He controlled the greens and was able to put Kevin Na's rough outing out of his mind on his way to victory. TPC Sawgrass can wreck your mind, and Na fell victim to it and, frankly, himself. If you missed Na waggling and waggling and whiffing and pulling up on the ball, all before yelling at himself to "Pull the trigger!" you missed a human train wreck.

Na shot a 76 on Sunday after holding the 54-hole lead. Playing withone like that would be tough but Kuchar got through it.

Could this be a win that catapults him to a Major victory? Who knows but its as close he'll get until he wins one. But what was great about his victory? Kuchar is the third "name" to win on tour in three weeks. First Jason Dufner won in Louisiana, then Rickie Fowler won in Charlotte and now Kuchar is a the Players Champion. And before that Bubba Watson won the Masters. Thats huge for the PGA Tour that struggled with journeymen winning and everyone at home scratching their heads, saying, "WHO?!"

But not anymore with Kuchar. Or maybe they were saying Kooch?

Shocker Golf heads to the West Coast this week for the Stanford NCAA Regional.

WSU is the 7th seed in the 13 team field led by Cal and hosts Stanford.

This is a loaded team heading out west and they could do some damage. Too bad for them, there are no Big 12 teams in the field - a wish they really wanted to have happen.

The Shox may be from a "small" school but they aren't short on talent or wins. Remember this is a team that won five times this season, NOT including the MVC Title in Hutch and they finished no worse than sixth in any tournament.

If the West Coast is paying attention, they might want to watch out.
