Pop tab contest benefits Oaklawn tornado recovery

May 16, 2012|By Robert Marin | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(DERBY, Kan.) — More than a million pop tabs were counted at Derby Middle School today. The effort to collect tabs started earlier this year to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.

When a school in Texas heard about, it decided to make it a competition. The schools eventually tied, with Derby collecting more than 600 pounds of tabs.

The competition also led to help for survivors of April's Oaklawn tornado.

After the Texas school heard what happened, it organized a walk-a-thon that raised $357 that will be sent to help in recovery efforts.
