(OAKLAWN, Kan.) — When Sedgwick County and southeast Wichita were hit by a tornado April 14, many peopled pitched in to help.

One of them was Tammie Middendorf. She's a 1st grade teacher at Oaklawn Elementary in Derby.

After the storm moved through, she spent the next three days helping her students and their families cleanup their homes.

On Thursday, Middendorf received a check for $250 from Super Car Guys. She's also eligible for an award honoring community service. If she's chosen out of 11 other finalists, she'll receive a vacation valued at $2,500.

The assembly was a surprise to the students and the 1st grade teacher.

"I had no idea", says a smiling Middendorf.

Middendorf has been with Oaklawn Elementary for 30 years, when she heard that the storms hit the school her gut reaction was to come and help out in anyway possible.

At first the storm damage was so extensive that Middendorf could not get near the school, she decied to first help in some of the surrounding neighborhoods.

"Picked a house and started helping", added Middendorf.

When she finally got to the school Middendorf said she helped clean up classrooms that had been hit by the storm.

Middendorf feels she was made to teach at Oaklawn calling it her second home.

"Don't want anything happening to them (her students)...very protective of them", says Middendorf.

Putting in the effort to clean up storm damage is just one more way she can show how much she loves her kids.
