Westar tweaking how it handles payment plans

May 21, 2012|by Kim Hynes | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — If you fall behind on your Westar payment, you won't get as much wiggle room to catch up.  Westar is starting to require full payments when someone misses a payment on their payment plan.

For example, if you can't pay a bill for the first time Westar will set you up on a payment plan.  You pay $25 to get onto the plan and then divide that bill over 12 months. The agreement requires payments be made on time in order to avoid disconnection.

If you miss one of those 12 payments, Westsar used to let you pay half of your balance.  However, now Westar will require the full amount if you fall behind while on a payment plan.

This change doesn't impact the Cold Weather rule.  Westar will also still put people on payment plans, the full payment only goes into effect when you fall behind.

A spokesman for Westar says they used to always require full payments when someone missed a payment on a payment plan.  But during the downturn in the economy, Westar tried to be more flexible.  The spokesman says it's time to get back on track to the way they used to operate.
