The Backstretch Blog: Bowyer on the Backstretch

May 23, 2012|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

After racing  just for fun and finishing 14th at the All-Star race, it's back to Charlotte for a second week, but this time it counts. NASCAR will run its version of a marathon, also known as theCoca-Cola 600.

NASCAR's longest race has been, well kinda of tough on Bowyer. In six starts, he has just one top 10 (in 2010).

Bowyer did take home one piece of hardware from All-Star weekend, the victory burnout competition. NASCAR's version of the slam-dunk contest or home run derby, pits some of the top drivers in the sport, showing off their best burnout.

“It’s about time,” stated Bowyer after  winning for the first time in four tries. “I love competing in this event every year and I’m excited to finally win. My strategy was plain and simple – make the best donuts and the most amount of smoke. That’s what celebratory burnouts are all about.”

And his win, is also a win for Kansas. The winner takes home a cool $10,000 for his favorite charity.

“What’s pretty cool about this event is the fact that I got to carry my charity’s logo – Emporia Community Foundation – on the car and the $10,000 donated prize will certainly help them in their efforts. The trophy is pretty cool, too. I’m definitely going to display that in my dirt shop!” said Bowyer.
