(EL DORADO, Kan.) — Officials with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism are hoping for a successful Memorial Day Weekend.

They say after a spring which brought plenty of rain, workers have the grass mowed and are hoping people will come out.

"We've got a real good crowd in already," said Seth Turner, the Park Manager with El Dorado State Park. "Hopefully the Kansas Weather cooperates and states this way through the weekend."

This time last year, very few people were at the parks because of the excessive heat and problems with blue green algae. This year, many people are already showing up and grabbing spots in the "first come, first serve" area.

But in other parts of the park, it's a different story. Many spots are empty because they're reserved. The people who made reservations either did so online or with the new smart phone app. It was released earlier this year and is free.

App Review

It features GPS mapping capabilities, finding the closest park, and helps users learn more about the park and other historical sites.

The app allows you to search for parks based on various categories like activity, region, or based on a friends' location (if they checked in on Facebook). The GPS location and explanation of each park works really nicely and is easy to read and navigate.

One area that needs improvement is the news feature. This feature is a mirror of the department's website and is not optimised for mobile. I'm sure this will be fixed in a future update.

You can find the app on the iTunes Store. Just search for "Pocket Ranger Kansas".

Lakes hoping for busy Memorial Day.
