Memorial Day events in the Wichita area

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Monday is Memorial Day. It's a day when the country pauses to remember military personnel who died while in service to the United States.

Events are scheduled across Kansas to honor those who sacrificed.

Wichita:

Resthaven Cemetery at 11800 W. Kellogg from 11:00 a.m. to noon

  • Flyover of the Oklahoma Air National Guard F-16’s Jayhawk Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.
  • Memorial service

Maple Grove Cemetery at 1000 N. Hillside starting starting at 10:00 a.m.

  • Re-dedication of Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Pavilion will include bagpipes, procession and speakers

Lakeview Cemetery and Funeral Home at 12100 E. 13th starting at 11:00 a.m

  • Military flyover
  • Avenue of Flags

Augusta:

Elmwood Cemetery at 501 E. 12th starting at 9:00 a.m.

  • Memorial service will include presentation of colors, wreath laying, three-voley salut & taps
  • Congressman and Army veteran Mike Pompeo will speak
  • If inclement weather, even will be moved to National Guard Armory

Winfield:

Kansas Veterans Cemetery at 1208 N. College starting at 10:00 a.m.

  • Command Sgt. Maj. John J. Ryan, Kansas National Army Guard, will speak
  • Music will be provided by the Winfield Community Band
  • Military honors and ceremonial wreaths will be presented
  • Bring a lawn chair, as seating could be limited

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries.  A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.
