El Dorado liquor store owners not crazy about Sunday sales

June 03, 2012|by Jim Grawe | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(EL DORADO, Kan.) — Wichita made the change five years ago.  This week, liquor stores in El Dorado were open for the first time on a Sunday.

The El Dorado City Commission approved the change earlier this spring, citing that most other communities in South Central Kansas have already done it.  But the owner of Bright's Liquor says it didn't come at the recommendation of of retailers.  He doesn't expect Sunday sales to improve his bottom line.  Instead, he says they'll most likely just cut into sales on Saturday and Monday.  Meanwhile, there's the added overhead of staying open another day every week.

A representative from the Kansas Association of Beverage Retailers says Sunday sales are third highest of the week in communities that allow them.  Although, he agrees that Sunday sales have little positive impact on a store's bottom line.
