Chad Cross

June 13, 2012

On a 4th grade field trip, Chad Cross toured a television station and watched what happens behind the scenes to produce a live newscast. In awe of it all, he decided on his career that day.

Today, Chad is News Director at KWCH. “It was the ‘magic of TV’ that inspired me then. Now, it’s about the responsibility we have as journalists to ask questions, hold the powerful accountable and use our medium to make a difference in the community,” he said. “It’s also about our service to viewers, relaying vital information for their safety, especially when there’s severe weather in Kansas.”

Chad has been at KWCH since 2002, producing coverage of major events like the tornado that destroyed the town of Greensburg, the capture of Wichita’s “BTK” serial killer, and the Jayhawks’ 2008 national championship.  He's proud of the award-winning news produced at KWCH, including national and regional Edward R. Murrow awards, 2011 Kansas Assoc. of Broadcasters' "Station of the Year" and a 2012 Emmy nomination for news excellence.

Chad oversees all editorial decisions and manages the people who bring you the news, weather and sports. “I’m fortunate to lead a newsroom that prides itself on thoughtful, ethical decisions about our coverage. Every day we strive for compelling storytelling that focuses on who is directly affected,” he explained.

Chad’s work at KWCH includes launching Eyewitness News at Nine and Wichita’s first weekend morning newscast; also, expanding Eyewitness News to sister station, KSCW, with newscasts 7-9am, 4pm and 9pm; and, a Spanish newscast weeknights at 10pm on Univision affiliate, KDCU.  He also created FactFinder 12 Investigators, a team of award-winning reporters, and expanded the popular “Does it Work?” consumer series to a weekly feature.

Before managing, Chad worked as a producer, anchor, reporter and assignment editor. He has a bachelor of journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. Chad is originally a farm boy from northern Colorado.  In his free time, he still enjoys a little farming in his yard in Wichita.
