Salina residents thirst for fluoride knowledge

(SALINA,Kan.) — It’s a daily staple...but what goes into the water that we drink, use on our lawns or even shower in?

A group based out of Salina known as "Salina Cares" is asking that exact question.

They are starting to wonder why the city has placed fluoride in the water for over four decades.

The folks in the group make it a point to go out of their way to use water that does not have fluoride in it.

"We have an added expense that we don't think is fair or equitable", says group member John Boesen.

Now the group is trying to get the city to take fluoride out of its water. Fluoride has been added into the water in Salina for over forty years. Members of "Salina Cares" believe the addition of fluoride is bad for your health.

"This is just the grassroots, we are now just getting started really", says member Lou Tryon.

The city manager’s office in Salina did contact Eyewitness News to confirm that they are aware of a handful of people that have some concerns about what is going into their water.

Officials say the members have been regulars at city council meetings as of late to address the topic.

The group recently took out an ad in the local paper to let people know that they will be holding a meeting this Monday night at the Salina library. The group has a common collective goal for the get-together.

"Give people the opportunity to make a decision an informed decision for themselves", says Boesen.

"We really need to educate and that’s out purpose of our meetings”, adds Tryon.

The group says its long term goal is to have fluoride out of city water within the next couple of years.
