Wingnuts win in extras

{WICHITA, Ks.} — The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Kansas City T-Bones 6-5 in 10 innings at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Taylor Freeman drew a one-out, bases loaded walk to force in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th and allow the Wingnuts to take two of three in their series against the T-Bones. Tied at 5-5, Juan Richardson drew a leadoff walk and escaped a rundown to steal second base with C.J. Ziegler at the plate. After Ziegler was intentionally walked, David Peralta advanced the runners with a comebacker to pitcher Jacob Wiley. Mitch Einertson was intentionally walked to load the bases before Freeman came to the plate.

Matt Nevarez threw two shutout relief innings in the ninth and 10th to earn the win.

Wichita had a 5-3 lead going into the top of the eighth when Kansas City rallied for two runs to tie the game. Bubby Williams and Justin Bass drew back-to-back walks to open the inning and eventually moved to first and second on a wild pitch. Brandon Jones singled to left to drive in Williams and Bass, and tie the game at 5-5.

Ray Sadler drove in the first run of the game in the top of the third against Wingnuts' starter Derek Blacksher. With runners on the corners and no outs, Sadler grounded into a double play at third base that scored Gus Milner.

The Wingnuts answered back in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Khoury and Jake Kahaulelio drew one-out walks and each took an extra base on a passed ball. John Rodriguez drove in both runners with a line drive single to right.

Reid Fronk homered to right-center in the top of the fourth to re-tie the game, while Williams singled home a run with two outs in the sixth to make it 3-2 Kansas City.

Wichita responded again in the bottom of the sixth. Rodriguez led off with a single to right, stole second base, and advanced to third on a single to right from Richardson. After Richardson stole second, Rodriguez scored from third on Peralta's sacrifice fly to center field. Mitch Einertson singled home Richardson with the lead run with a two-out line drive to left.

Blacksher took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. Blacksher walked one and struck out four.

Brian Grening started for Kansas City and also took a no-decision. Grening allowed four earned runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out six.

Wiley took the loss for the T-Bones.

The Wingnuts stole three bases in the win, including three from Richardson. Wichita also drew eight walks, and has drawn 20 over the last two games.

The Wingnuts open a three-game series at home against the Amarillo Sox on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson will be on the mound for the Wingnuts. Amarillo goes with right-hander Derek Christiensen.
