(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita authorities are considering criminal charges after finding 31 dead catsin a home last weekend.

Police say a 69-year-old woman lived at the residence and claimed ownership of the cats. She told police she was staying at a friend's house, but was checking on the animals.

Police say she may have violated Kansas cruelty to animals law for abandoning the pets.  "Basically what she told investigators on the site that day is that she had been coming by daily to check on the animals.  She was unaware we had any problem. That clearly is not the case and so we have moved this into a criminal arena," said Deputy Chief Tom Stolz.

Police say two malnourished dogs were also in the home, they were eating some of the deceased cats.

Possible charges in dead cat case.
