In a Republican primary election for Sedgwick County Kansas District Attorney today, 07/02/12, 5 weeks until votes are counted, Deputy DA Marc Bennett and former Deputy DA Kevin O'Connor finish effectively even. Today it's Bennett 37%, O'Connor 36%, with 27% of likely voters undecided. Any outcome is possible. Bennett has strength among older, traditionally more reliable voters; O'Connor leads among younger voters. Bennett draws support from wealthier voters, moderates, women, and those who attend religious services infrequently; O'Connor has an advantage among middle-income voters and those who did not attend college.

Incumbent District Attorney Democrat Nola Foulston, first elected in 1988, is not seeking re-election. There is no Democrat running for the seat; the winner of the August 7 primary will be the next District Attorney.

In a Republican primary election for Sedgwick County Sheriff today, 07/02/12, incumbent Bob Hinshaw and Wichita Police Department Captain Jeff Easter also finish even, Hinshaw 43%, Easter 42%. 15% of likely voters are undecided. Among men, Hinshaw leads by 15 points; among women, Easter leads by 12 -- a 27-point gender gap. Easter draws strong support from women, voters age 50-64, those who have attended some college, moderates, and those who attend religious services infrequently. Hinshaw draws strong support from men, the youngest voters, conservatives, and those who attend religious services occasionally. The winner of the August 7 Republican primary will face retired Wichita Police Department officer Democrat Jefrey Weinman in the November general election.
