The Backstretch Blog: Once, Twice, Three Times Keselowski

July 02, 2012|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

This time one year ago, Brad Keselowski was barely on anyone's radar. Sure he had two career NASCAR victories, but both were widely considered to be kind of a fluke. Fast forward a year, and Keselowski has won five times since, including three this season,  the most recent this past weekend at Kentucky.

"I think you've got to go out and win races," said Keselowksi.  "Luck stuff, everybody says luck stuff in races.  If you go out and have good cars and win races and execute and do all those things, Tony proved that you'll win a championship.  And that's what it's going to take."

It's also going to take a little more consistency from BK, despite having three wins, the number two team is only tenth in the points standings. But Keselowski feels ask if most of the teams are behind them.

"Tenth in points because we had the reliability issues early in the year," said Keselowski.  "You take out our two or three reliability issues -- was it two or three?  I can't remember what it was -- if you remove those, we're a legitimate top 5 team, and that's the way it's been all season long."

And he is definitely confident. Even though Keselowski's driving is a bit more polished and controlled than when he drove though Carl Edwards to get his first win at Talladega in 2009, he is no less brash.

"I don't like being pushed around," said Keselowski. "I hate that.  I can't stand it, and I won't stand for that.  I can't stand it.  I don't know if that creates a level of desire that makes us better."

Which could be scary. Because BK continues to develop into one one of the top drivers in the series and if they keep winning...

"Got to win races.  Tony proved that last year.  You've got to win races," said Keselowski. "You don't back your way the Chase.  Don't rest on your laurels.  You've got to have fast car when's the Chase starts with great reliability and great execution."
