(WICHITA, Kan.) — A Wichita father faces charges after leaving his three kids in his car while he went into the Wal Mart on W. Kellogg.

Shoppers noticed the youngsters (ages six, two and eight months) in the car, which was left running, and contacted management.  The store contacted police.

Officers were on the scene when the 33-year-old father returned to the car 40 minutes later.  The kids were already out of the car by that time and there's no word on who long they were inside the car before police arrived.

The father told officers it was too difficult to take all three kids into the store, so he left them in the vehicle.  The kids were put into protective custody.

The father was arrested on child endangerment, marijuana possession and driving on a revoked license.

The kids' mother was contacted later.  Since officers could not reach her sooner, the kids were put into protective custody.

Police stress it is never okay to leave kids unattended in a car.
