Josh Lowey dominant in win over Laredo

LAREDO, TX — The Wichita Wingnuts (34-21) beat the Laredo Lemurs (23-31) 2-1 at Uni-Trade Stadium on Sunday night.


Josh Lowey earned the win, throwing seven shutout innings to improve to 9-2 on the year. Lowey held the Lemurs to three hits and three walks, and did not allow a base hit over his final five innings of work. Lowey struck out five and retired nine straight hitters from the second inning into the fifth. Lowey allowed just one runner past second base, and retired the leadoff hitter in six of seven innings.


Wichita broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning when Ryan Khoury lined a home run to deep left field. Later in the inning, John Rodriguez drew a four-pitch walk and advanced to second when Jairo Perez was hit by a pitch. Gerardo Avila made it 2-0 with a line drive single to left that scored Rodriguez.

Laredo scratched out their lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stephen Douglas tripled to center field with one out and scored on Javier Brito's sacrifice fly.


Matt Nevarez closed out the game with a perfect bottom of the ninth, including back-to-back strikeouts of Palmer Karr Jr. and Uriak Marquez for the final two outs.


Kyle Wilson started for the Lemurs and took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits in seven and two-thirds innings. Wilson walked four and struck out four.
