Police: Chase suspect nearly struck children

July 19, 2012|by John Boyd | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Wichita police arrest a 24-year-old man after a police chase Wednesday evening.  It all started around 6:45 when officers tried to pull over a car for a minor traffic violation and an incorrect tag.

The car didn't stop, instead it continued - breaking several other traffic laws.  At one point, the driver threw what was later determined to be a black semi-automatic handgun from the car.  Officers later retrieved that weapon.

The suspects kept going until they reached some duplexes in the 600 block of N. Illinois.  Police say the driver pulled up into a yard, missing a small swimming pool with three young children in it by just four feet.

Police spokesman Lt. Doug Nolte says it's lucky the young girls (ages nine, six and four) were not struck or injured.

The car then drove around to the other side of the duplex, where the driver and a passenger got out and entered the home.

Police caught up with them there and arrested them.  Officers also recovered a significant amount of drugs, especially marijuana.

The driver and his female passenger (also 24 years old) were arrested.  The driver was booked into jail on felony evade and elude charges, along with aggravated assault (for nearly striking the children), felon in possession of a firearm and drug charges.
