(ANDOVER, Kan.) — One of the victims in the Colorado theater shooting has ties to Andover. 26-year-old Jonathan Blunk is being called a hero after blocking his girlfriend when a gunman opened fire during the showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' early Friday morning.
Blunk's mother, Dawna Nygaard, stepfather Lee and two brothers live in Andover. They went to Aurora Colorado over the weekend to attend the candle-light-vigil and visit site of the shooting. They are now preparing to move Blunk to Reno Nevada for his funeral. A family friend tells Eyewitness News, Blunk was separated from his wife who lived in Reno with their two children.
The Denver Post reports Blunk was shot while protecting his girlfriend Jansen Young. Young told the news outlet that Blunk threw her on the floor and covered her when the shots started. She says he pushed her under the seat and he eventually stopped moving. She says they had been dating since October.
Blunk moved to Colorado in 2009 according to the Denver Post. The newspaper reports he went to high school in Reno. After graduation in 2004 he enlisted in the Navy. Blunk left the Navy, separated from his wife and moved to Colorado in 2009.
The family friend says the emotional and financial strain on the family has been immense. He's set up a fund to help the family with the trip and funeral. Donations can be made to Dawna and Lee Nyggard Donation Account at Equity Bank in Andover.
