(WICHITA, Kan.) — A one year-old boy has drowned after falling into a home swimming pool in northeast Wichita.

The call came in shortly after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday from a home in the 5600 block of Coe Drive, near 13th & Edgemoor.

Paramedics tried to revive the toddler at the scene.  He died later at Wesley Medical Center, police said.

"It's a bad situation for the family, for the people working this case, for the neighborhood," said WPD Capt. Brent Allred.

Allred said investigators were still interviewing the seven people who were home at the time.  He said it appears all were asleep when the one year-old somehow got outside and fell into the backyard pool.

It's unclear how long he was in the water.

Lisa Cardona, who identified herself as the child's step-grandmother, said kids from all over the neighborhood use that pool.

Cardona said the boy's mother is a recent graduate of Southeast High School and was working hard to provide and care for her two children.

"I would hate to be in her shoes right now because I would never want to feel the loss that she's probably feeling right now.  Especially as much as she loved her kids, Cardona said."

Investigators will continue to gather evidence and pass along their findings to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office to see if any charges should be filed in the case, Allred said.

Police urge pool owners to consider using a protective fence or some type of security feature to prevent children from accidentally falling into the water.  Parents should also consider using door locks that are out of the reach of children.
