Wichita man hospitalized following shooting

July 29, 2012|By Joe Fenton | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Witnesses say a heated argument in a southeast Wichita neighborhood ends with shots being fired, and a man going to the hospital.

It happened around 10:30am on Sunday, near the intersection of Mt. Vernon & Bleckley.

It started when 911 dispatchers recieved reports of a disturbance outside of a home.  While officers were still en-route, shots were fired.

When police arrived at the home, a number of people ran inside.  Officers followed them in, and secured the area.

Officers at the scene say the victim, a man in his 20's or 30's, had walked into the Via Christi - St. Joseph campus with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.  He was later transferred to St. Francis due to the extent of his injuries.

Several people were transported to police offices downtown for further questioning.  Officers at the scene say while they have not identified the shooter, they believe they have one solid suspect in the group.

Investigators say that no one witnesses the actual shooting.  They just heard the shots fired, and saw the aftermath.  They add it is not clear what led up to the shooting due to conflicting accounts from witnesses and the victim.

Police add that as many as six children, ages 1 to 14, were inside of the home while the disturbance was taking place outside.  No one was hurt.
