(WICHITA, Kan.) — On site enrollment started Monday at Wichita public schools, and some parents know that will mean big changes for their student.
USD 259 recently changed school boundaries forcing at least 5,000 students, or about one in ten, to move to a new school this year.
Everything is new for students at Isely Elementary. The name of the school hasn't changed, but the location has. The new school was built at 53rd and Woodlawn.
"We are still working on some things in the main hallways, so access to that is a little limited," said Principal Kathy Stybr.
Stybr is expecting 475 students to enroll. Some will move to Isely because of the recent boundary changes, others are like parent Valerie Vazquez.
"We are coming from a parochial school, and switching over to public schools because we live in Bel Aire," Vazquez said.
Vazquez likes that Isely is close to home, plus its brand new. She feels her daughter, Natalia, will adjust well to first grade.
Enrollment has been going pretty smoothly at Isely, but online enrollment has hit a few snags.
The system went down for a little while Monday, the district had it up and running again by afternoon. But parents are warned online enrollment may be a bit slow until all of the kinks can be worked out.
Those are just some of the questions Principal Stybr is facing.
"Just making sure that they understand transportation, our uniform policy with us being a new school," Stybr said.
Bus routes won't be decided until after enrollment, that's when the district will know how many students it has, and where they need to go. Parents will get those details in the mail before school starts
"August 15th is right around the corner," Stybr said. "We are super excited for them to get here."
Lets hope her students feel the same way.
