High voter turnout not expected in Sedgwick County Tuesday

(WICHITA, Kan.) — Sedgwick County's Election Commissioner does not expect a high voter turnout for Tuesday's primary election.

Speaking to county commissioners this morning, Tabitha Lehman said 2,800 advance ballots had been returned so far, and 725 people have voted in advance in-person. She says that's less than the same time in 2008, when the primary election had 15% voter turnout.

Lehman told commissioners redistricting also meant a number of changes for Sedgwick County voters, so registration cards were sent out to remind people of their districts, where they will vote and of the new voter ID law.

Electronic polling books will once again be used at many polling places in the Wichita area. The devices allow poll workers to scan the barcode on state-issued drivers license or ID cards for faster check in. The devices will not be used at some lower-traffic polling places in outlying areas.

Sedgwick County is once again holding in-person advance voting at 15 satellite locations for several days. Any voter can vote at any one of these locations. Voting at satellite locations runs Thursday and Friday from Noon to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Advance voting in-person is also available at the election office through Monday.
