The Backstretch Blog: De' Ja' Vu, We're in Pocono...again

August 03, 2012|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

If you are asking yourself, "weren't we just in Pocono?"  The answer is almost. It was just seven races ago that NASCAR visited Pocono, by far the shortest time between visits to the same race track. And according to Joey Logano that makes coming back to Pocano, that much easier.

"When the races are closer, your notes relate a lot better than it is coming to a racetrack a whole year later, because a lot of things can be different a year later," said Logano. "Your general set up of a car usually changes a lot throughout a year.  Your chassis usually changes and your bodies are different.  It's hard to go back on what you have and improve on that.  Usually come with a whole different package."

Of course, when you head to Pocono, you start most conversations with Logano's teammate Denny Hamlin, who has four victories at the tricky triangle.

"This track always changes," said Hamlin. "With each win that we've had here we've had completely different setups in the car so we constantly evolve those setups and we're going to have to do it again this weekend.  From what the first practice looked like, it looked like our teammates were pretty good so we should head in that direction."

But, you might forget that Jeff Gordon leads all drivers with five wins at Pocono, and he could certainly use a win this weekend.

"This track - even after the repave made it smoother and faster with more grip - still has 'old' Pocono characteristics which I love," said Gordan. "The shape and the banking of the turns haven't changed. It still has three unique - and three very challenging - corners."

Other drivers who have had success at Pocono include, Brad Keselowski, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and Bobby Labonte.
