Hendrick Motorsports has now won three straight races, and eight times this season (if you count the Sprint Showdown and the All Star Race). So much for all that talk earlier in the season about how HMS may have lost it's mojo.
Jeff Gordon's win on Sunday puts him back into the mix for a wildcard spot in the Chase for the Championship. With Dale Earnhardt, Junior leading the points, Jimmie Johnson tied for the series lead in wins and Kasey Kahne leading the aforementioned wildcard standings, it is possible that all four Hendrick teams will make the chase. And who would have thought that a month ago?
It would look really good," Kahne said of getting all four cars in the Chase. "It would make Mr. H pretty happy. He's been happy with the speed we've had all year, all the teams. He talks about Jeff every week, how fast they are, the bad luck they've had."
Not that Gordon and Kahne both don't have work to do. There are still five races to go until the field is set for the Chase and there are number of drivers, like Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and Kyle Busch for starters, who are all capable of winning multiple times.
"All I will say is we've been on a nice streak of finishes," said Gordon after Sunday's win. " Even though they haven't been wins, they've been really solid finishes, top 5s, top 10s, that have gotten us further up in the points. That is something to build on, 'cause this year, the way things have gone, we haven't had a lot to build on. The last several weeks, we've had something to build on."
But it just goes to prove that HMS is still probably they top organization in the garage area. As they run now, Roush only has two of it's three cars in, as doe MWR. Gibbs only has one and the same is true for RCR. And I'm sure you have heard this 1000 times, but it comes down to one thing, people.
"I always felt like we could do it," said Gordon's crew chief Alan Gustafson. "Yeah, it looks bleak. When you're in that position with Jeff Gordon as a driver, it's not a good feeling.
"But I knew, and I've said this a lot, I think the performance of our car as far as sheer speed, this may be one of the best years of my career. The speeds of the cars have been fantastic and Jeff has been great. I knew the key ingredients were there."
