(WICHITA, Kan.) — Voters in Sedgwick County cast ballots Tuesday to determine the next district attorney for the 18th Judicial District which includes Wichita.

Marc Bennett defeated Kevin O'Connor 54% to 45%. The vote totals were 21,590 for Bennett and 18,232 for O'Connor.

Bennett says he's humbled by all of the support he's received.  "It was a long night but it was worth the wait," he said.  Bennett also spoke highly of O'Connor calling him a good man and a good lawyer.

Bennett will take the job from Nola Foulston who is stepping down after 24 years as DA.  With no Democrat running to replace Foulston, Bennett will likely have a clear path to victory in November's General Election.

Bennett has been a prosecutor for Sedgwick County for fifteen years. The 42-year old has spent much of his career prosecuting sex crimes and domestic violence cases. Bennett raised more money than O'Connor.

O'Connor is a former assistant district attorney. He worked under Foulton for 17 years. After leaving Foulston's office in 2009, he has served as a Special Prosecutor for Butler County. O'Connor handled a number of high profile murder cases including BTK and Adam Longoria.
