(WICHITA, Kan.) — A new security line at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport is now up and running.  The addition of a fourth screening lane is expected to speed up the process.

The airport hadn't planned to make the change until the new terminal opened, but went forward with the upgrade because of extra long lines during the early morning hours.  Passengers were missing flights because of the delays.

"The fact that we need that now before the new terminal I think speaks well of how things are going around the city," said TSA Director Keith Osborn.

Osborn said the $110,000 improvement project includes more advanced x-ray screening technology.

"The screens the operators use give a much clearer picture.  Much as the difference between an analog TV and an HDTV."

Travelers should also notice signs directing them to a side of the screening area based on gate assignments.  However, officials say it won't matter which side you choose.   You can still make it to the other end of the terminal.

Feedback from travelers was positive.

"They felt like it was less congested," said airport spokeswoman Valerie Wise.  515 passengers passed through the check-point between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Thursday with a maximum wait time of 8 minutes, Wise said.

Passengers are still advised to arrive two hours before their flight.
