Salina businesses see high number of computer thefts

October 09, 2012|By Samantha Anderson | KWCH 12 Eyewitness News

(SALINA, Kan.) — Two businesses had computer or computer parts stolen over the weekend. One of those businesses was American Family Insurance.

" I noticed one of the windows was propped open and I thought 'I know we didn't leave that open." said Jim Wells of American Family Insurance. "I continued to go in, a little nervous as to what I might find. " I saw footprints on a desk and I thought immediately 'someone's been here.'"

American family insurance lost a computer tower, a laptop, money and a ring in the break in.

" You wonder why," Wells said. "What did we do? What's going on? What are they after?"

Other businesses hit in the last month are Glam On The Go, Accounts Receivable Services, All-State Insurance, Cross Midwest Tire, The Book Nook, and Heartland Adjustment. All of the stores had computer or parts stolen.

"We are trying to piece that together and try to figure out what it is they are looking for on those hard drives," Lt. Scott Siemsen of the Salina Police Department said.

Police obtained security video from one of the earliest break ins-- at Accounts Receivable Services. The video shows to individuals at the scene. While they aren't sure the same suspects are responsible for all of the burglaries, police do see a trend.

"We believe most of these are connected, not only because of the items that were taken, but the immediate locale of where they are at. " Lt. Siemsen said. "They are all in the same vicinity."

Police do say that businesses can protect themselves by locking doors and windows and keeping their properties well lit.

Wells said his company takes extra precautions to keep its customers' information safe.

"Our computers are on lock down," Wells said. "They are encrypted as soon as they are unplugged, cut out or anything."

Wells has been in Salina for 17 years and says this is the first time something like this has happened to him.
