Fried chicken. If only there was a way to enjoy this comfort food without feeling uncomfortable about all those calories.
The Big Boss Oil-less Fryer might be able to help. It claims to cook with halogen, convection, and infrared heat. It says it can prepare crispy fried food with little or no oil.
Denise Dias from the Sedgwick County Extension Office is helping us fact-check this fryer.
"You know any way you can make fried chicken without any fat or oil, or very little ... yeah great idea," Denise said.
We bought the Big Boss Oil-less Fryer for $107.14. That includes shipping.
Denise starts to make the breading for the fried chicken that she found in the oil-less fryer recipe book. It includes milk, bread crumbs, and seasoning.
"Right now we have a breast, a thigh, two-piece wing, and a leg (inside the oven)," Denise said.
Next, the recipe calls for two squirts of olive oil from the sprayer that came with the oven. Denise puts on the lid and sets the oven to 375 degrees for 35 minutes.
We watch the chicken get gold, then brown, then really dark brown.
"Ohh... it's crispy," Denise said.
Despite its appearance, Denise says its tastes like baked chicken.
"It's not bad," she said.
Finally, Denise follows the French fry recipe. But she doesn't like turning each one over halfway through baking.
"I think there are faster ways to make French fries," Denise said.
Were they worth the wait?
"They're just like a baked potato," Denise said.
Does it work?
"Yes it works," Denise says. "But a little disappointing ... because of the fries. I was hoping they would taste and feel a little bit better."
Denise says this would be great for people who don't want to cook a lot and don't want to heat up an oven. However, she says you can do what this oil-less fryer does in a regular oven.
