You have a chance to make a new friend, and help out some stressed animals. The Kansas Humane Society right now has several animals available for adoption from Oklahoma. They include Joe, a Jack Russell Terrier, who survived last month's tornado that destroyed the animal shelter in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Initially, a dozen of the Oklahoma dogs and cats were shipped to Wichita. Most of them have been adopted, leaving Joe and three cats still available. Melissa Houston of the Human Society tells us, "You can see the stress, I mean they had a long journey.

They were recovered from starvation and abouse, and now some of them have new homes. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department seized about 150 animals since last year after a new animal cruelty law went into affect. Today, the Hope in the Valley organization offered some of their horses that were seized up for adoption.  Hope in the Valey takes in some of the worst cases of neglect and abuse, and help the animals recover. "They've been abused, they haven't been feed," says Shasity Kuffler with Hope in the Valley.  "It's important because we thake them in and rehabilitate them, and give them a second chance in life.  We give them a chance that nobody else will give them.

Kansas is launching an effort to increase the number of children adopted through the state system.     Social and Rehabilitation Services Secretary Rob Siedlecki says his agency is starting a $300,000 marketing campaign to find adoptive homes for 420 children who don't have other prospects, such as adoption by relatives. The funds for the campaign announced Monday come from a federal program. Siedlecki says the effort will focus on who are 8 years old and older, who may belong to a minority group, have a disability or belong to a sibling group that wants to stay together.

Update: The Kansas Humane Society says that all but three of the Guthrie pets have been adopted and another cat is newly up for adoption. The following animals are still looking for a good home: Joe the Jack Russell Terrier – (Joe was a TV Star on KWCH yesterday for the noon Pet of the Week segment if you need some new footage.) The Kansas Humane Society is hosting what it calls the biggest adoption event in its history. They will begin their Adopt-A-Thon Friday morning at 11, then stay open until 200 pets have found new homes. KHS has other activities planned along with the Adopt-A-Thon, you'll find those on their website. During the event, adoption fees will be 50% off. The event is part of KHS's efforts to win a $100,000 ASPCA Challenge.

Forty purebred dogs and eleven puppies are taken from a Kansas breeder. Half of them are now getting a new life at a Newton animal shelter. But how they got there reflects a trend you may not have heard about. The furry faces inside the cages are waiting their turn for a haircut and a check-up at the Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton. "They were scared," said Julie Gleason, a volunteer. "The uproar of them moving made them nervous. " All nineteen of the dogs arrived Saturday morning.

After a lifetime in an outdoor kennel a Southeast Kansas breeder voluntarily gave them up for adoption.  But it was too late for some of the 37 Lhasa Apso and Chihuahua dogs.  The state told Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton to expect seventeen rescued dogs.   Only seven Lhasa Apsos arrived.  A handful of Chihuahuas went to another shelter in Pawnee. "Our understanding is that there were quite a few that were old and in bad shape," said Will Tate, Marketing Director at Caring Hands.

Since last year, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department has seized about 150 animals due to neglect and animal cruelty. The resources that house and rehabilitate the animals are at capacity. “We expect to see more of them and that's why were pushing for the adoption of the ones we have,” says Detective Dale Butcher. Hope in the Valley is an equine rescue operation in Valley Center.   It has more than 20 rescued horses that need permanent homes.

The Hutchinson Animal Shelter is asking for donations to help build a new outside area for dogs. It's volunteers say the space is needed to make sure pets get enough exercise and stay healthy while they are waiting for adoption. The shelter has on average 30 to 40 dogs waiting to be adopted. The shelter's volunteers say they spend too much time in their kennels because the only time they get walked is when the volunteers can walk them. So the shelter is asking for donations to to put in a fenced area behind the kennel building.

Ten-year-old Anna Curry says she's grateful for her mom, dad and brother.  She became part of her Andover family as a toddler after spending her first three years in a Russian orphanage. "Orphans in Russia are not first class citizens, I'll say that,"  David Curry says. He and his wife, Tami, adopted Anna in 2005. Today, there are some 700,000 orphans in Russia.  Over the past 20 years, Americans have adopted more than 60,000 of them.  But now, Russia has banned adoptions to the U.S.  American officials say it's in retaliation for the U.S. keeping out Russians accused of violating human rights.

From rescue puppy to therapy dog, it's been a busy three years for a cocker spaniel in Derby. David Peebler adopted Barney from the Kansas Humane Society.  But Barney quickly became more than just a family pet. Click here for photos of Barney Peebler would take him to visit his father at a local nursing home and noticed that Barney enjoyed spending time with the residents. Now the two visit six nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities in the Derby area every week.

"Ember" was in critical condition from smoke inhalation after a fire January 19th on N. Chautauqua. There were no people home at the time of the fire but an adult dog and two puppies were found inside. More Pictures of Ember  Efforts to revive two of the dogs were unsuccessful. However, Ember did respond to CPR with help from pet rescue masks that were donated to the fire department. Ember's recovery has been slow. The six week-old Terrier mix was bottle fed for a few weeks and is now eating some solid food.

Update: The Kansas Humane Society says over 114 animals were adopted out as part of their Priceless Purrs event. For two hours on Saturday, kittens were free and puppies were half-priced. A spokesperson for the organization says 76 cats, 27 dogs and 1 rabbit all found homes this weekend. Each animal adopted has had the following services: a full physical exam, spay or neuter surgery, microchip and some vaccinations. A number of dogs and cats are still available for adoption.

The Kansas Humane Society held a drive this weekend to get their kittens into new homes. More than 200 were adopted. Normally, it would cost $99 to adopt a cat. During the drive that ended on Saturday, it cost $17.76. Humaine society officials say that if the drive was not held, the cats might have been euthanized.

A round of golf not the only thing supporting teachers as part of this year's Adopt-A-School program. A silent auction was part of the activities Monday for the 9th annual Adopt-A-School Golf Tournament. The event is sponsored by KWCH and Rusty Eck Ford. The program matches businesses with schools.
