by Robert Marin A special election to determine whether Sedgwick County voters want a casino is set for August 7th, but if you've already decided how you're going to vote, you can cast your ballot starting today. Advance voting begins this morning at 8:00 a.m. for the casino issue at the Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse, 510 N. There are more than 250,000 voters in Sedgwick County. Almost 40,000 of them have already cast their ballots.       Advance voting is underway -- and it's becoming a force in elections, well before Election Day.   Minutes before five o'clock, two people rushed into this satellite polling place to vote.  In total, 53 people voted here Wednesday. "Two jobs and going to school is hard," said one of those voters, Nicole Thomas. "I work, so my mom's like, 'you need to go vote'," she explained Wednesday evening.

Advance voting for the August 3rd is underway in Kansas. Starting Wednesday, Kansas voters can contact their county election office to request an application for an advance ballot. Voters can also download one by clicking on the link at the left side of this page. All ballots must be received in county election offices by the close of polls on Tuesday, August 3, the day of the primary. People can also vote in person at the county election office starting Tuesday, July 27 or up to 20 days before the election, depending on the county.

Sedgwick County opens additional advance voting locations today.  Those stations will be open through July 31. You can click the link for a list of locations and hours. The county expects a higher than normal turnout for the primary election Tuesday. Election commissioner Bill Gale expects about 20% of the people to vote, which is about 5% more than past primaries. He says 13,000 people have already asked for advance mail ballots.  And about half have already returned those ballots.

Advance voting in person begins in Sedgwick County, and officials expect a large turnout for the November 2nd general election. Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Bill Gale told Sedgwick County Commissioners Wednesday that he expects at least a 50% voter turnout for this election. With some 260,000 registered voters in Sedgwick County, Gale says he expects at least 130,000 to cast a ballot. The election commissioner also expect more people to vote in advance. Gale says about 63,000 advance voting ballots have been mailed out in Sedgwick County so far, and some 20,000 have already been returned.

Thousands of advance ballots have hit mailboxes across Kansas with the 2012 presidential election less than three weeks away. Both Republicans and Democrats know voter turnout will be crucial in determining not only who wins the White House, but many races at the local and state levels as well. That's why the parties make a concerted effort to find out where those advance ballots are going and make sure they get turned in.  "Advance voting has become the norm.  It's what over 60% of the people are going to do for this election," said Kelly Arnold of the Kansas Republican Party.

Voting get high tech in Sedgwick County.  They're now using a new system using electronic poll books.  It's meant to speed up the check-in process and reduce errors in process.  We'll have more tonight at 5.

As advance ballots go out for a special election on a hotel sales tax, some Wichita voters say they do not understand the question. A petition drive forced a Feb. 28 public vote on a guest tax incentive for the Ambassador Hotel project at Douglas and Broadway. Since mail-in ballots have gone out to voters, the city says its received dozens of calls about the question on the ballot. Here's how the ballot question reads: "Shall Charter Ordinance 216 entitled: “A charter ordinance amending and repealing Section 1 of Charter Ordinance No. 213, of the city of Wichita, Kansas, which amended and repealed Section 1 of Charter Ordinance No. 183 of the city of Wichita which amended and repealed Section 1 of Charter Ordinance No. 174 of the city of Wichita, Kansas, pertaining to the application of revenues from the transient guest tax” take effect?"

Advance voting is underway on a proposed sales tax increase in the Dickinson County town of Chapman. Our news partners at The Salina Journal report city leaders want to raise the sales tax from 7.3% to 8.3%. The special election is set for Aug. 9. City leaders tell the Journal they started exploring the sales tax increase in the Spring while brainstorming ways to develop an industrial park. The $60,000 to $100,000 in extra revenue would also be used for things like street maintenance and attracting a grocery store.

Sedgwick County election officials expect a 14 percent voter turnout for the general election April 5. The general election includes races for Wichita mayor, Wichita city council and Wichita school board. Only around 8 percent of registered voters in Sedgwick County turned out for the primary election for this race. The election office is offering its usual advance voting options, including advance voting by mail and satellite voting locations which will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Sedgwick County.
